Featured Wedding Venue: Tyler Arboretum
If you've always dreamed of an outdoor wedding amidst the sights and sounds of nature, Tyler Arboretum might be the venue for you. Whether you picture exchanging vows surrounded by the buds of spring, flowers and herbs in full bloom on a warm summer's day, the rich reds and oranges of autumn leaves, or snow-covered conifers in winter, you'll find a picture-perfect backdrop for your big day here.
Located in the heart of Delaware County, PA, Tyler Arboretum dates back to the days of William Penn. Quaker Thomas Minshall bought the land in 1681, and that land stayed in the family for eight generations, all the way to 1944. The seeds of the arboretum were planted with two of Minshall's descendants, Jacob and Minshall Painter, 19th-century brothers fascinated by the study of natural history. Together, they collected a number of specimens of rocks and dried plants, and began the work of planting over a thousand species of trees and shrubs on the land. In 1944, another of Minshall's descendants, Laura Tyler, donated the land to a board of Trustees established to look after the land as an arboretum. The arboretum grew to encompass the extensive horticultural collection it hosts today.
The arboretum can accommodate up to 210 guests for a wedding. Ceremonies can be held outdoors among fragrant gardens among flocks of butterflies, overlooking woodlands and a trickling stream, or in a sun-filled meadow.
The venue offers plenty of space for indoor celebrations as well in an historic stone barn. The structure dates back to 1833, when the land was still a working farm. After the founding of the arboretum, the barn served as its Education Center for decades, but following an award-winning renovation in 2016, it's now equipped for all your matrimonial needs. The renovated interior includes a kitchen, bridal suite, and restrooms on the second floor, and a wide-open third floor with a view of the soaring rafters above that marks the perfect spot for a night of dinner and dancing. Just be mindful of the venue's noise restrictions: no indoor music is allowed after 11 PM. This floor preserves the old-fashioned charms of the barn's original timber structure and stone walls with modern conveniences: the space includes a mini bar, heating and air conditioning, wifi, and audiovisual capabilities.
A sweeping staircase connects the third floor reception space to a stone terrace and colorful gardens below. If you'd prefer an outdoor reception, the terrace offers a tent space to enjoy the sights, sounds, and scents of the nearby flora. Tyler Arboretum partners exclusively with Jeffrey A. Miller Catering to provide full-service catering for your big day. That way, you're guaranteed a caterer that knows the venue's restrictions, requirements, and equipment. And it's one less planning decision you'll need to make. Jeffrey A. Miller Catering offers artisanal meals that are truly made from scratch: herbs and vegetables come from their own urban garden, and the charcuterie is cured in-house. That focus on fresh ingredients goes hand-in-hand with the arboretum's natural setting.
